The New Zealand Universities Rugby Football Council plays an integral role in Aotearoa’s rugby legacy, offering students opportunities to excel both on and off the field. Since 1908, NZU Rugby has united students, players, and alumni through a shared love of the game, fostering collegiality, innovation, and excellence.
As a bridge between sport and higher education, NZU Rugby creates key pathways for players to represent their university, nation, and even aspire to higher honours, including wearing the black jersey. It promotes inclusivity by providing opportunities for men and women to develop skills, forge lifelong friendships, and embrace values like hard work and camaraderie.
Beyond rugby, NZU Rugby champions travel, cultural exchange, and personal growth while nurturing future professionals. From student competitions to alumni engagement, NZU Rugby celebrates tradition and opportunity – uniting the leaders of tomorrow through sport and education.

Our History
With over a century of history, NZU Rugby is deeply woven into the fabric of rugby in New Zealand. Since its formation in 1908, NZU Rugby has forged a rich legacy built on skill, camaraderie, and opportunity.
The first international tour to Japan in 1936 set the stage for global connections, followed by a landmark victory over the touring Springboks in 1956 (22-15). Another historic moment came in 1977, defeating the British & Irish Lions 21-9 at Lancaster Park. In 1988, NZU Rugby achieved international glory by winning the inaugural Student World Cup.
In 2022, the introduction of the women’s team marked a new chapter, while recent away and home tours against Japan Under 20s continue the tradition of fostering international exchange. NZU Rugby’s history reflects the enduring spirit, innovation, and pride that define New Zealand rugby both past and present.
